Ballymana National School, NS, Craughwell

History of Our School

Ballymana National School was built in 1872, having one classroom (which is the room at the front on the right side of the school). The north end gable of the school is the same as it was originally.

The first principal of the school was Patrick Ruane who is the great grandfather of locals Tom and John Ruane. He and his wife taught in the same classroom. Mr. Graham who lived in Craughwell, took up his post as succeeding Princpal and travelled to the school in a pony and trap. Mrs. Fahy was the assistant teacher during this time.

In 1931 a second classroom was added to the school. The two rooms were divided by a folding partition and an open fire heated the classrooms. Each child was responsible for bringing a sod of turf into school every day. Children walked in their barefeet from Manninard, Kilconieron, Roxboro and Rahasane to Ballymana. There was a well worn path from Ballylinn West to the school and many of the old stiles can still be seen on some of the walls around the school.

Further expansion and development of the school continued during 1993. A third classroom was added in  2004 and in 2005 a large 4th classroom was added. In 2008, the school was transformed into a modern, innovative five classroom school, complete with school office, and two learning support rooms. Each classroom has separate male and female facilities.

The playground has fresh tarmacadam and the fields have all been reseeded to the best of conditions along with a newly constructed handball court. In 2009, the parents committee along with many dedicated parents erected a fantastic customised playground for all the Ballymana N. S. children.

Many attending pupils are the offspring of former pupils of Ballymana National School.  The school is located adjacent to St. Killian’s church, Ballymana, Craughwell, Co. Galway.
