Parents Association

Role Of A Parent Association

The Parent Association is the structure through which parents/guardians in a school can work together for the best possible education for their children.

The Education Act, 1998 sets down the role of the parent association.

  • The Parent Association works with the principal, staff and the board of management to build effective partnership of home and school.
  • Educational research on the involvement of parents in schools shows that children achieve higher levels when parents and teachers work together.
  • The Parent Association can advise the principal and Board of Management on policy issues and incidents that may require a review of school policy, e.g. Bullying, Safety, Homework, Enrolment, Behaviour problems etc.
  • Parent Associations can suggest and/or organise extra-curricular activities.
  • The Parent Association is a support for parents in the school.
  • The Parent Association can invite speakers to address the parents on issues which are topical or relevant.
  • The Parent Association is not a forum for complaint against either an individual teacher or parent. The Complaints Procedure is the mechanism for this.

Ballymana Parents Association meet a few times throughout the school year to plan fundraiser events and to organise seasonal celebrations.  It is our goal to help generate a sense of community within the school and where possible raise funds for the benefit of the whole school.

This year to date the Parents Association has been responsible for:

  • Creating the first Ballymana N.S. Calendar, although our time frame was short we thought that this was a great way of promoting our school identity while allowing local businesses and tradespeople an opportunity to advertise their services.  It was also a great boost to school spirit as the children really got into the various ‘themes’ by being in props/costumes and seemed to enjoy modelling on the day of the photo shoot!  We are very proud of how it turned out, a beautiful keepsake for sure.
  • Making Halloween themed goodie bags for every child in the school for them to enjoy on the day of the Halloween dress up day.
  • Hosting a tea/coffee reception after the Christmas Carol service with lots of delicious home baked treats from wonderful volunteers.
  • Organizing a special visit from Santa to the school with a chocolate selection box for each child.
  • Helping out and rallying support for the Schools Annual Christmas Market in Craughwell Hall.
  • Organizing a Family Bingo night at Easter, this event was planned to give families an chance to meet up in a social way with fun and games and prizes galore and also raise money for the school.
  • Liasing with Mr. Hickey about how the funds raised can be best used to benefit our children and the school as a whole.

The Parents Association Welcomes new members and fresh ideas all throughout the year.

We do not require a huge commitment and only ask parents to help out where they can.

Throughout the year there may be one event you can help out with,

Please don’t hesitate to put your name forward just because you cannot commit to all the events.

We would encourage more people to get involved from ALL classes

to come together to make positive changes for all of our children and our school.
